Chinese language, Again
By singagandalf – Dec 7 – http://groups.google.com/group/soc.culture.singapore/browse_thread/thread/2d124db88290f91d?hl=en#

This round of discussions on the Chinese language is no different from the previous rounds. Superficial, without getting to the root of the problem. Don’t blame the nature of the language, the philosophy of teaching it, the method of teaching it, or some other absurd excuses.

Every language is difficult to learn. A language is a system of symbolic representation which is not always systematic or consistently logical. English grammar is as much a pain to learn as that of any other language.

Whatever attributes, positive or negative, that you can find in Chinese, you can find too in English; in fact in all languages. It is rubbish to believe that Singaporean Chinese are born to be naturally good in English language but not that of their own mother-tongue Chinese. The only difference between these two languages right here in Singapore is their status. English is the undisputed No. 1 whose influence permeates the political, economic and social landscape. To refer to Chinese as a second language is condescending. It is more appropriate to consider it a second-class, perhaps even no-class, language. This is not a natural phenomenon but a direct result of government policy. The government policy in turn is not a natural phenomenon but a result of generations of leaders succored by native English nations, first the UK, then the US.

In Singapore, there is no reason to learn Chinese, let alone learn it well. This is because Chinese is almost completely out of use here. You don’t need it to find your way around, you don’t need it to get things done, you don’t need it to know what’s happening around you, you don’t need it to know what’s going on around the world. In short, you don’t need it at all. Under such circumstances, having to learn it in the classroom is nothing but a pain.

Now we have this suggestion to use English to teach Chinese. This is the ultimate insult to the Chinese language and the Chinese race. The reason given is that the students come from English-speaking homes. This is baloney. In his recent trip to China, Obama has stated that the US will send 100000 students over to China to study. American homes are completely and 100% English environment. When they want to learn Chinese, they do not think of using English to do it. Now, isn’t it stupid of us to want to do so?

The right way to learn a language is to learn it from its originators, in this case, the Chinese in China. We should send our students to China or bring the teachers over from China. But then, if the environment to use and practise Chinese is not available locally, why bother to do this? If the government is sincere and truthful about caring for the Chinese language, all it has to do is to make it a second working language. In this 21st century, there is no excuse for
not doing so.
